Connection refused message on the client

I have Synergy server running on an ubuntu machine and the client running on a Mac. Whenever I try to connect the client to the server - I get the following message

NOTE:connecting to 'server ip here' : clientip:24800 WARNING: failed to connect to server : Connection refused.

Any help in resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.
