No connection nor log between Ubuntu server & client

Running 1.4.16 on both server and client, I cannot establish connection, without being told any error. Since ping, ssh are ok, I believe they are on the same network (both are plugged to the same router via ethernet). Mac client can connect fine.

So maybe I should rephrase my question like this to start meaningful thread: where should I look at to see what's happening? Especially on client side, is there log files generated?

Server: Ubuntu 13.04. Using GUI client, specify the location of .conf file. It kept saying:

NOTE: accepted client connection
INFO: crypto mode: cfb
NOTE: new client disconnected

Client: Ubuntu 12.04. From commandline like synergyc 192.168.8.133

Update) Now I use GUI on client too, which shows error log:

NOTE: connecting to '192.168.8.138': 192.168.8.138:24800 WARNING: failed to connect to server: Protocol error from server
